Export of bauxite ore from India:

  • Indian Bauxite Production: India is the world’s sixth-largest producer of bauxite, accounting for 6% of global production. The country’s production of bauxite increased by 3% in 2022 compared to 2021. However, the production is expected to decrease at a CAGR of 0.04% between 2022 and 2026.
  • Leading Producers: Gujarat Mineral Development is one of the leading producers of bauxite in India. In 2021, the company’s output was up by 44% over 2020.
  • Export Data: Exports of bauxite from India increased by 2% in 2022 over 2021, with the highest share being exported to Nepal. India’s bauxite exports are expected to drop at a CAGR of 0.03% between 2022 and 2026.
  • Chemical Composition: The chemical composition of bauxite ores can significantly impact their specific fluoride removal performance. Bauxite ores from India, Guinea, Ghana, and the United States were characterized and compared in terms of elemental and mineral composition, fluoride adsorption affinity and capacity, surface area, and equilibrium suspension pH. Guinea, Ghana, and USA bauxites performed similarly in terms of fluoride removal, while India bauxite had a significantly lower performance.
  • Mineralogy: The main crystalline Al phase in all bauxites is gibbsite, and an additional crystalline Fe phase (hematite) is detected in Ghana, India, and Guinea bauxites. Kaolinite is found only in USA bauxite, and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is found only in India bauxite.
  • Equilibrium Solution pH: India bauxite had a significantly higher equilibrium pH (pH 8.1 ± 0.1) compared to Guinea, Ghana, and USA bauxites (pH 6.6 ± 0.1, 6.5 ± 0.1, and 6.2 ± 0.4, respectively). This is indicative of the dissolution of CaCO3, which is present only in Indian bauxite and correlates with its lower fluoride removal performance.
